“Don’t think. Don’t listen. Don’t look. Just close your eyes and ride it out. Okay?” He said as he strapped her into the snug, ovoid pod; his fingers sped over the locks and buttons as he tried to ignore the constant banging bearing down on the doors behind them.
“And you’ll be right behind me, daddy? You’ll find me when you land?” She asked as tears blurred her father’s face; she wiped them away intent on remembering every detail of his face.
“I…of course. Now you have to go. I love you.” As he kissed her forehead, the doors slammed open and they came pouring in snarling and snapping their teeth; in an instant, he closed her pod and slammed his hand on the release button.
The vacu-hatch opened and sucked everything inside the bay out into the vast, endless void; she watched as her father, and all the monsters they ran from, froze solid in the chill of the void.
